When Meteors Strike
Posted by Brian Gallutia on Feb 16, 2009
As mentioned in our previous newsletters, the current economic downturn has people evaluating costs and the efficiency of internal processes. With the increase in bandwidth speeds and the decrease in bandwidth costs, the topic of off-site backup over the Internet comes up when consulting with clients.
Since most off-site backup companies charge per gigabyte, the client that’s interested in utilizing this type of service has to take a good, long look at their data and make the determination of what is truly essential to their business operations.
To help the client during our consulation, I will ask “If your business were to get hit by a meteor right now, what data would you need in order to resume work within 48 hours.” After the client begins to think in those terms, the “excess” starts to be shed and the core data the client needs to survive comes to light.
PCS always recommends two forms of backup for our clients: on-site and off-site. The on-site backup usually consists of either an interchangeable hard drive solution that backs up the entire server and critical data, while the off-site solution backs up the data that can NOT be lost.
I know there are some of you out there that have no backup at all. Yea, I see you there, not looking me in the eye when we’re talking about “what if” scenarios and gambling with the future of your business. As our lead technician Chris is happy to remind our clients…
“Jesus saves, and so should you”
If you’re not doing any backup for yourself or your business now, you need to be. If you are interested in getting your feet wet with off-site backups, our partner Mozy offers 2GB for free to use at your discretion. If you need more storage or need to back up data from servers or business workstations, there is a charge, but the cost is minimal and the peace of mind is well worth the investment.
As always, if we at PCS can be of help, give us a call at 615.371.9931 or use our online form to request a consultation.
Until next week, look to the stars…
