Junk E-Mail Folders

An issue came up last week with a customer that has prompted me to make a clarification about PCS’s spam filtering and how it works with Microsoft Outlook.
As many of you may already know, Microsoft Outlook has a folder called Junk E-Mail that catches the occassional piece of spam. This Junk E-Mail folder is separate and distinct from the Junk E-Mail folder that can be found on your PCS mail account.
When an email is sent to your account, it arrives on the PCS mail server and is “read” by our spam filter in order to determine if it is a legitimate piece of email. If the mail server scores the e-mail in question as “spam”, it will treat that particular email in the way you tell it to (see article Training Your PCS Spam Filter for more information). If you have not changed your personal spam settings, the following defaults kick in:
- E-Mail scored with a “low” or “medium” chance of being spam is sent to the Junk E-Mail folder on your PCSDesk E-Mail account
- E-Mail scored “high” is 99.9% likely to be spam and is automatically deleted
What can be confusing is that if you are using Microsoft Outlook, you have two Junk E-Mail folders to contend with: the one attached to your e-mail account with PCSDesk and the one that appears in Outlook. These two folders are in no way related and both should be checked often.
