With tears in my eyes

Posted by Brian Gallutia on Mar 31, 2010

Many of us know that when a  Nigerian Prince emails us directly, pleading for help in moving funds, that this is a scam intended to rob you or your money and your identity – but what if you get an email from a dear friend, one who is vacationing in London and needs your help?

CNN contributor Bob Greene relays his recent experience with a new type of scam that almost landed him in plenty of hot water.  It is a recommended read and should serve as a reminder to always use both common sense and “gut feelings” in sifting through all of the information we get through the Internet every day.

E-Mail Font Saves $

Posted by Brian Gallutia on Mar 27, 2010

The Associated Press is reporting that a Wisconsin college has found a new way to cut costs with e-mail – by changing the font.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has switched the default font on its e-mail system from Arial to Century Gothic. It says that while the change sounds minor, it will save money on ink when students print e-mails in the new font.

Diane Blohowiak is the school’s director of computing. She says the new font uses about 30 percent less ink than the previous one.

That could add up to real savings, since the cost of printer ink works out to about $10,000 per gallon.

Blohowiak says the decision is part of the school’s five-year plan to go green. She tells Wisconsin Public Radio it’s great that a change that’s eco-friendly also saves money.

Nashville in at 19

The Nashville Business Journal reports that Nashville is the 19th most vulnerable city in America when it comes to cybercrime, according to a report by Symantec.

The criteria for the report was based on..

..the number of malicious attacks reported by Symantec Security Response, the number of potential malware infections, the number of “spam zombies,” the number of “bot infected computers” that can be remotely controlled by hackers, internet access, computer spending, and online purchases.

Greed Squad

Posted by Brian Gallutia on Mar 23, 2010

geek-squad-logoHD GURU reports that Geek Squad is offering to “sync your 3-D glasses for an amazing experience” with a newly-purchased 3D TV from Best Buy.  The problem is that there is no such thing as synchronizing 3-D glasses: they sync automatically.

HD GURU called 3 Best Buy stores to confirm that each employee did receive training on 3-D TVs and installation services, but when quizzed about how the syncing service worked, three different answers were given:

Blue shirt one said the glasses need to be synced with the Blu-ray player. The second geek referred to the 3D glasses needing to sync to the player via the USB port within the glasses, an impossible feat as there is no USB port on the glasses. The third stated the need to acquire the glasses’ IP address to sync with the Blu-ray player. There is no IP address for 3D glasses; they have no connectivity to the Internet or network. The Samsung battery powered glasses “sync” to the 3D content wirelessly via an infra-red pulse emitted by the TV.

In the interest of not appearing petty by bringing this bogus Geek Squad offering to light, PCS would like to reiterate that we do not view Geek Squad as competition. PCS is technology-oriented, customer service-oriented, and above all,  trust-oriented.  Outside of the horror stories that surround Geek Squad’s technicians,  they have consistently proven that their first priority is to “sell the cure before addressing the disease.”

Since PCS does not operate in this manner, then there is no comparison and therefore, no competition.
