Hard Drive Relief Q1 2012

Instead of receiving news of more hard drive shortages and prices going up and up, DigiTimes expects hard drive shipments to jump from 110-120 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 140 million units in the first quarter of 2012, for a total difference of up to 30 million units.

Western Digital last week said it made “substantial progress” in restoring their hard drive operation in Thailand after severe flooding that hit the area last month. WD has been working tirelessly to remove submerged equipment from certain facilities and begin the process of restoring buildings and facilities and getting operations back on track.

Mail Service Changes

Over the weekend PCSDesk upgraded its mail services yet again with new hardware and a faster Internet connection. All user accounts were migrated over starting Saturday evening at 10:00pm CST and the process completed at 7:00am CST Sunday morning.

Hard Drive Prices Going Up

Recent flooding in Thailand has shut down 14,000 factories, some of which supply hard drive components to manufacturers and PC / Server makers. This unfortunate condition will drive up the cost of hard drives sharply, which will negatively impact tech budgets for the next few months.

To compensate for this eventuality, PCS recommends not putting off any technology purchases to the end of the year and commit to buying sooner rather than later. If sooner isn’t an option, then the impact of this natural disaster should minimize by the middle of Q1 2012 when pricing levels return to normal.

PCS will keep our friends and customers updated on pricing changes as events unfold.

Email Upgrade Complete

On Sunday October 2nd, the email server upgrade was completed successfully. There were times throughout the day that the mail services were not available to some users, but ultimately the conversion was a huge success and the new software is running splendidly.

Over the course of the next few weeks PCS will be highlighting the new features available to our customers. Stay tuned!

Lenovo Partnership

Email Server Upgrade

PCS will be initiating a mail server software upgrade on Sunday, October 2nd. All mail services are expected to be interrupted for no more than 40 minutes while the upgrade takes place.

When the upgrade it is complete, our users will be given a spiffy new interface, updated spam protection, greater compatibility with mobile devices (iPhones, tablet computers) and enhancements to contact management and calendaring.

XP Support Ends April 8, 2014

It’s been a long-time coming, but it’s finally here. Microsoft has decreed that Windows XP will be officially retired on April 8, 2014 – exactly 1,000 days after the death-sentence was announced.

The announcement comes from Stephen L Rose on the Windows 7 Team Blog. You can read the post in it’s entirety here.

So what does this mean to our friends and customers? Well, if your office is primarily using Windows XP then it is time to get with your software vendors and see what the upgrade strategy is to migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7 (or even Windows 8, when it comes out in 2012).

Reminder: Update your Flash

Back in June PCS commented on vulnerabilities found in Adobe’s Flash player software and recommended our customers do a little bit of housekeeping by updating their Flash players and plug-ins as soon as possible.

Last week, we came across quite a few systems that not only did not have this update in place, but were also lacking updates with other Adobe products, most notably Adobe Reader.

Customers without these updates are susceptible to the following zero-day exploit:

This vulnerability (CVE-2010-2884) could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. There are reports that this vulnerability is being actively exploited in the wild against Adobe Flash Player on Windows. Adobe is not aware of any attacks exploiting this vulnerability against Adobe Reader or Acrobat to date.”

Even though the Flash Player exploit has already been addressed, separate patches for Reader and Acrobat will be issued this week to tackle the above vulnerability.
